If you haven't got a default scanning software loaded onto your machine, then take a look at Vuescan, which simply and easily allows you to connect to your scanner in minutes.

VueScan continues to support my elderly yet still fully functional HP ScanJet 5300c even though HP stopped producing drivers for it with the arrival of OS X. Once the settings are set, I can scan a stack of prints with single-button ease even though my scanner has no document feeder. All the features of my elderly Minolta negative scanner are also supported. This gives me a consistent interface for all my scanning needs.

Also, Hamrick doesn't care to rename his version. Version 9.0.0 is the same file name as version 9.0.27 which is the same file name as 9.0.79. I rename the files when I download them.

I fear it is intended behavior, too. However, it is inconsistent. If you launch System Preferences from the Dock or double-click its icon, it goes to the "Show All" pane. I've filed a bug report.

However a 32 bit program on a 32 bit OS can only address 2gb of RAM. You've gotta leave some for the OS itself and other services. But chances are even at 2gb unless you're scanning medium format negs in at full resolution tiffs you won't hit that limit. A 4x5 neg. at 4800 dpi would likely tax a smaller system pretty bad.

Vuescan does colour-correct scans from photographic images by referencing profiles for over 200 different types of colour negative film and four types of slide film. It can also colour-correct raw data based on profiles for your particular scanner, as well as allowing for a wide range of manual adjustments. And VueScan is engineered for crop and white-balance accuracy to minimise the amount of manual post-scan adjustment necessary, which will be especially appreciated when scanning batches of images using the "Input|Batch scan" option.

If you were on Windows, I'd tell you to delete the Vuescan folder then reinstall. Not sure if that would work on OSX or not.
